Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility in Fashion

I have always wanted to use fashion as a means to promote a greater purpose. I believe fashion can be used as a social tool to bring positive change. When I involve myself in the community such as volunteering, and I think about my own career/social footprint, I am inspired to continue advocating for fashion practices that prioritize people, the planet, and help bring awareness to issues that affect our world today.

The Hope chest

My recent involvement was at The Hope Chest, a second-hand boutique store that supports domestic violence survivors and their children. I assisted with inventory organization, such as steaming different kinds of clothing items. As well as visual merchandising by styling the window display with seasonal looks.

Beyond the hands on experience I had at The Hope Chest, I saw how sustainability and social responsibility are intersected within fashion.  The team at the boutique are dedicated to repurpose clothing and use profit to rebuild the lives of many. I was reminded how fashion can serve to uplift individuals, connect, and strengthen communities.
